Experience

Research Assistant

1992 - present University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute

Developed and implemented an analysis tool for volcano monitoring that continuously reduces seismic data and posts results in near-real-time to the WWW. This system also provides automated alarms of potentially hazardous seismicity.
Created a relational database containing a global catalog of over 700 volcanic earthquake swarms at 150 volcanoes.
Participated in the seismo-volcanic crisis responses at Mt. Spurr, Akutan, Pavlof, and Kilauea volcanoes.
Prepared information releases concerning the location and size of significance earthquakes or volcanic events during non-business hours as duty seismologist.
Deployed and maintained 6 seismic networks at active volcanoes including two deployments of over 100 short-period and broadband seismic stations on Kilauea volcano and a temporary broadband and geobouy seismometer deployment in Costa Rica.
Responsible for the routine analysis of seismic data collected at 16 monitored volcanoes in Alaska.
Conducted GPS surveys at Kilauea volcano and participated in crustal deformation studies in Interior Alaska. Assisted with GPS and EDM surveys of Novarupta dome.

Mircoscopist

1989 - 1992 Reservoirs Environmental Services, Denver, Colorado

Analyzed airborne asbestos fibers using transmission and scanning electron microscopes and phase contrast microscopy. Analyzed building materials for asbestos using polarized light microscopy
Trained new technical staff; wrote computer code to reduce quantitative analytical data; prepared samples; processed and printed photomicrographs; calibrated the TEM.

Field Operations Coordinator

1984 - 1988 Magnetic Signal Company, Denver, Colorado

Coordinated all aspects of field operations for a ground magnetic survey crew of 3-5 persons.
Assisted with the generation of petroleum drilling prospects using magnetic and electrical methods.
Supervised the collection, processing, and quality control of 1000's of line-miles of ground magnetic data throughout the Rocky Mountain Region, the Michigan Basin, Central California, and Southern Argentina.
Designed an aeromagnetic data acquisition system for an ultra-light aircraft.
Conducted several other potential fields surveys including VLF, gravity, and CSMAT.
Responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of the geophysical instrumentation.

Service Manager/Technician

1980 - 1984 Copy-Tec/Becker Copier Service, Denver, Colorado

Managed a small copier service department for Copy-Tec. While at Becker Copier Service serviced and repaired a wide range of electrostatic copy machines.

Computational Expertise

5 years experience with SUN workstations under UNIX and over 14 years with PCs under DOS and Windows.
Maintained and programmed PDAS and Hakusan seismic data-loggers.
Programming experience in MATLAB, PERL, HTML, VRML, FORTRAN, PASCAL, Object-Pal BASIC, some C, and JAVA, along with several different seismological data interpretation programs such as the IASPEI tools.
