Who am I?

I am a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Geophysics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. The provisional title of my thesis is: Pattern and Process in Volcanic Seismology. My thesis advisor is Steve McNutt.

Current research projects

Compilation of a global database of volcanic earthquake swarms. This database contains summary information on over 700 volcanic earthquake swarms at 155 volcanoes active between 1979 and 1989. This database provides a base line for the comparison of future earthquake swarms and the potential for eruptive activity.

Broadband seismolgy at Arenal volcano, Costa Rica. In colaboration with Bill Melson (Smithsonian Inst.), Vilma Barboza and Jorge Barquero (OVSICORI-UNA), We deployed a broadband seismometer at Arenal volcano. A PDF version of the GRL article summarizing the results of the deployment can be found here.

A sample of the data collected is shown in the figure to the right.

Examination of b-values. In colaboration with Stefan Wiemer , I've been examining how the b-value varies with depth in subduction zones. For a summary, the abstracts presented at: 1995 GSA Cordilleran Section Meeting or the fall 95 AGU can be found under these links.

Scaling properties of volcanic tremor. This work is in progress. I plan to explore how the amplitude of tremor scales (e.g. power or exponential scaling).

Operational responsiblities

Along with my academic studies I have several operation reposiblities with the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) including: the routine processing of seismic data collected at the montinored volcanoes.

I serve as a duty seismologist for AVO and Alaska Earthquake Information Center (AEIC). As a duty seismologist, I am reposible for the rapid release information concerning significant earthquakes or volcanic events during non-working hours.
