The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located two light earthquakes that occurred on July 13th and 14th in the central region of Alaska. These earthquakes had preliminary magnitudes of 4.1 and 4.5 and were located at a depth of about 3 miles (5 km).
The events were felt at Wasilla, Palmer, Talkeetna. No reports of damage have been received at this time. Preliminary earthquake parameters:Time: 07/13/2002 22:04:29 Latitude: 62N40 Longitude: 149W16 Depth: 5 km Magnitude: ML 4.1
Time: 07/14/2002 08:33:22 Latitude: 62N40 Longitude: 149W13 Depth: 5 km Magnitude: ML 4.5
First motions focal mechanism parameters:
1st event
Paz=121; Ppl=28; Taz=27; Tpl=8
strike1=161; dip1=65; rake1=-15; strike2=257; dip2=76; rake2=-154
2nd event
Paz=129; Ppl=17; Taz=37; Tpl=9
strike1=172; dip1=72; rake1=-6; strike2=264; dip2=84; rake2=-162
The WSW-striking focal plane is consistent with the orientation of the mapped crustal faults in the
area. If this focal plane is the fault plane of the events, then they are the right-lateral
strike-slip events.
