On the ferry: Pete and I went down to Valdez and did some sea kayaking for my birthday. This is us on the ferry near Columbia glacier. We got off at Growler island, rented a kayak and paddled back up to the icebergs. |

Denali and Wonder Lake: Pete and I went to the Denali Backcountry Lodge to give a talk on volcanoes and earthquakes. In the middle of our talk the clouds over Denali lifted for the first time in weeks everyone ran out the door to head for Wonder Lake. We did, too. It was well worth rushing the end of the talk. |
Denali again, and fireweed: Another view of Denali, with fireweed in the foreground. Apparently when the fireweed stops blooming, snow is two weeks away. This photo was taken on August 4 and the blooms are nearing the top of the plant...a sign of impending cold. |
